Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI is a program for those with limited income and resources. As of January 2020, maximum monthly SSI for an individual is $783, $1,175 per couple, and $392 for an Essential Person within that household. It generally takes about 3-4 months to process the SSI claim. Medicaid (not Medicare) coverage comes automatically with SSI in New York. There is a resource (money in the bank, IRA’s, CD’s, etc.) limit of $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. If you own your primary residence, it will not count as a resource.
