Navigating the Affordable Care Act

Special Enrollment in New York State’s Health Marketplace has been extended to December 31. Open Enrollment begins on November 1.

Uninsured New Yorkers can apply for coverage through NY State of Health or directly to insurers. If you lost employer coverage, you must apply within 60 days of losing that coverage. Because of a loss of income, New Yorkers may also be eligible for Medicaid, the Essential Plan, subsidized Qualified Health Plans or Child Health Plus.

Anyone eligible for Medicaid or the Essential Plan can enroll throughout the year. New York is a Medicaid Expansion state, so more people are eligible. If the annual income for a single person is less than $16,105, Medicaid is an excellent option. The Essential Plan offered by the State, if an individual’s income is less than $24,120, is similar to Medicaid and can be free or cost $20 a month.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has created a number of changes that can be very challenging to navigate. Luckily, GMHC is an official ACA Navigator, and we are here to help.
