Annual Report 2019

THE GMHC DIFFERENCE
Letter from the CEO and Board Chair

Dear GMHC Community:

GMHC excels in many ways in ensuring the communities whom we serve have access to high-quality HIV/AIDS services. Our comprehensive approach is designed to help people living with HIV/AIDS overcome barriers to healthy, productive lives.

For nearly four decades, GMHC has been a major partner with New York City and the State of New York in ending the AIDS epidemic. In 2019, our contributions helped push new HIV infections to an historic low of less than 2,000. Our programs reach into communities where the epidemic now concentrates, particularly young Black and Latinx men who have sex with men.

The HIV care continuum is a public health model that outlines the steps or stages that people with HIV go through from diagnosis to achieving and maintaining viral suppression, which is key to positive health outcomes and virtually eliminating the risk of transmission. We work across nearly every step of the HIV care continuum. Again this year, our impact can be seen in our exceptionally high rates of linkage to care for people who test HIV positive at GMHC, enroll in care and adhere to treatment, and achieve viral suppression.

Our comprehensive model is vital to achieving these outcomes. In particular, our services work to address the barriers such as housing and food insecurity – the so-called social determinants of health — that prevent people from accessing and adhering to treatment. Many of our clients are homeless when they come to the agency. Housing is often the most requested service and foundational to positive health outcomes. People who don’t have to worry about shelter or a place to sleep at night are more likely to take their medications and keep their doctor’s appointments. In 2019, due to our intensive approach to supporting our clients, we saw all of our clients who gained permanent housing remain stably housed six months later. This metric correlated closely with treatment adherence and viral suppression.

Our impact along the HIV care continuum can also be seen in our approach to testing. In 2019, we relocated our Testing Center from West 29th Street to our new offices at West 38th Street, which allowed us to deliver all of our services under one roof. In 2019, the Testing Center conducted more than 3,000 HIV tests and nearly 7,100 STI tests. Of those who tested HIV positive, 91 percent were linked immediately to health care. In some cases where the risk to follow-up is high, we actually escort newly diagnosed clients to their first doctor’s appointment to ensure that they enroll in care and begin treatment.

While our impact can be seen in the data, the real measures of our work can be seen in the individual stories of our clients. This year’s annual report provides a glimpse into how we’re changing lives everyday through our Testing Center and supportive housing and meals and nutrition programs. Your sustained generosity and support made all of this possible.

Warmly,

Kelsey Louie Jon Mallow

New HIV Diagnoses in New York City (2008-19)

At the national, state, and local levels, we work with coalitions to drive for fair and effective policies to protect the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ people. Over the decades, we have helped ensure passage of landmark federal legislation including the Americans with Disabilities Act, which includes protections for people living with HIV, and The Ryan White CARE Act to improve availability of and access to care for low-income, uninsured, and under-insured people affected by HIV/AIDS and their families. For more about our current policy initiatives, visit our Advocate page.

In late 2017, GMHC merged with ACRIA, an internationally recognized organization that focuses on HIV education, training, and research. ACRIA studies the lives and needs of people with or at risk of HIV. It also leads cutting-edge research to understand the issues associated with HIV and aging. GMHC’s strategic partnership with ACRIA will yield greater impact and strengthen GMHC’s position as a national leader in care for people aging with HIV.

Further, this strategic partnership with ACRIA brought the Love Heals Youth Education Program into GMHC’s portfolio, expanding GMHC’s reach by offering youth prevention education through comprehensive and evidence-based workshops. Love Heals places powerful speakers in NYC-area schools where they educate thousands of students about sexual health, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections. This program was founded by Alison Gertz in 1992 after she learned that she had contracted HIV.

The growth in GMHC’s services earned the agency recognition in 2017 with the prestigious Gold Medal Award Prize for Organizational Excellence. This award from the New York Community Trust and the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee recognizes excellence in nonprofit management in areas including governance, finance, diversity, human resources, information technology, fundraising,
communications, and overall focus on results.

In 2018, GMHC made the bold decision to increase capacity and relocate to new space at 307 West 38th Street. This facility enables GMHC to expand program reach, re-integrate our testing and counseling efforts, and create new co-located services with substance use counseling, our congregate dining program, and case management. No one should be lost in a sea of referrals or asked to navigate
appointments across town.
