"It’s been an interesting journey and I am so grateful."
What was your situation like when you came to GMHC?
When I came to GMHC, I was a bit depressed. I was then a volunteer in the Theatre Desk because her male partner was HIV positive. I did not know that I had the virus (HIV) then.
What were you looking for when you came to GMHC?
I used to volunteer at various churches. I had many friends that had the virus so I wanted to help…make a difference.
When did you become a client?
I guess about 4 or 5 years after I started to volunteer. I had PCP pneumonia so that led me to get tested and that’s when I found out.
What is it like to volunteer while living with AIDS?
Volunteering gave me a sense of purpose and ultimately forgetting about the virus. It keeps me active and social. I am always making new friends and I have found so much support here through the years.
What are some of the other services and programs that you have used here?
Definitely the Wellness and Women’s Services programs as well as the Meals.
Can you tell us more about your volunteer work?
Today, I volunteer in the Wellness Program with Donna Pine and also for AIDSWalk. I have also volunteered for the last 20 years in the AIDSWalk Starwalkers’ tent, either registering or congratulating all walkers who have substantially fundraised for AIDSWalk while supporting our mission…To help fight AIDS and support all of those affected.
What do you with your spare time?
I live in near a beach so I enjoy walking along the boardwalk year round. Otherwise, I spend much of my time with my two grandsons, Imani (age 16) and Aaron (age 9). I also enjoy listening to music.
What are your favorite music artists?
My all-time favorite is Prince. For Latin music, I love Salsa…so my favorites are Marc Anthony and Gloria Estefan.
