Programs and Services at the Women's Institute

Outreach & Mobilization
This team seeks to reach and mobilize women in order to reduce the rate of new infections of African-American and Latina women and help women access the full range of supportive and medical services offered at GMHC or elsewhere.

  • Lesbian AIDS Project (LAP), New York State and City's premiere program geared specifically toward outreach, HIV prevention education information that supports the reduction of high-risk behaviors of lesbian, bisexual and other women who have sex with women. LAP is the host of our world-famous Pussy Packs, safer sex kits especially designed for women.

  • Peer Leadership Initiative recruits, trains, educates and mentors women to be Peer Health Educators — some of the best in the city!

  • Women-Specific Testing Days — in collaboration with GMHC's David Geffen Center for HIV Prevention and Health Education as well as many organizations, churches and groups across the city we host days where women can be tested for HIV in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Ongoing outreach in our communities

Education & Empowerment
Our aim is to increase the personal autonomy of HIV+ and at-risk women, address unmet and/or emerging needs of women and families impacted by HIV and AIDS primarily — though not inclusively — through group and individual level work with women.

  • Positive Prevention for Women (PPW), a six-week, cyclical prevention case management program that promotes wellness and health for newly-diagnosed women;
  • SISTA and Li'l SISTA, dynamic groups and workshops for women of color and young women of color respectively (both of which are adaptations of the CDC's evidence-based intervention)
  • La Essencia de la Mujer Latina

Social Marketing & Media
We work to create awareness of HIV and AIDS as a women's issue and reduce the spread of HIV through large-scale, strategic messaging initiatives.

Policy & Partnerships
The Women's Institute seeks to address the core social, economic (and political) vulnerabilities that are contributing to and exacerbating the spread of HIV for women; to use policy, advocacy and structural-level interventions to reveal and address the extent and urgency of the HIV epidemic among women of color and to promote progressive policy debate and systematic change.

Research, Evaluation, Best Practice & TA
The Women's Institute seeks to develop, incubate, adapt and evaluate innovative women-focused best-practice prevention and treatment modalities designed for and controlled by women on the continuum of risk for HIV infection.

Bernadette Gladden, Client
"GMHC gives you the opportunity to get into certain things and go places and that makes me feel better about myself because I have proved that I'm not a loser. I'm a winner."
