   Introduction

Over two decades ago, GMHC learned that if we wanted people to pay more attention to the AIDS crisis, to our loved ones who were dying, or to the rampant homophobia compounding HIV’s devastating effects, we’d have to organize, unify, and make our voices heard.  That lesson paved the way for GMHC’s grassroots origins, and continues to inform our work today.  Many of the obstacles we faced then remain undiminished.  Our commitment to keeping humane and effective AIDS public policy on the legislative radar remains uncompromised.  Our strategies may be different, our numbers may be larger, and our efforts more organized, but our tactics remain unchanged and our goal inviolate:  our voice and our vote will win the fight against AIDS.
