GMHC Statement on the Institute of Medicine's New Report

"The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People: Building a Foundation for Better Understanding"

"We at Gay Men's Health Crisis are pleased to see such a large and comprehensive report commissioned by the federal government addressing the critical health needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people," said Janet Weinberg, Chief Operating Officer of GMHC. "Among the health disparities that disproportionately affect these communities, over half of all new HIV infections in the U.S. are among gay and bisexual men. This report is an excellent step forward in identifying and addressing the social, economic, and structural barriers that drive these health disparities among LGBT people, which should lead to appropriate treatment and care they need and deserve."
