New York, NY--GMHC applauds the US Supreme Court for their decision to hear these two cases on same-sex marriage. GMHC is especially proud that the Windsor case is one of the two cases being considered.

Commenting on the decision, GMHC's CEO Marjorie J. Hill, PhD declared, "The Supreme Court is now in a position to rule on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage. This is a historic day, and one that we welcome. It moves us closer to a day in which all Americans will be treated equally. We look forward to the day on which discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is found by the Supreme Court to be unconstitutional, and hope to see Prop. 8 struck down in California. We are very proud of both Robbie Kaplan, a GMHC Board member and Edie Windsor, a longtime friend, for their leadership on this critical civil rights issue. As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton noted in her remarks before the United Nations, combating laws which discriminate against gay men and lesbians is an important step to reducing stigma and creating a society in which all people are valued and able to access health care which are critical steps as we move towards creating an AIDS-free generation."
