GMHC - Fight Aids. Love Life.

A Monumental Day

On August 11, 1981, in Larry Kramer’s living room, the world changed forever
8.11.2011

On August 11, 1981, in Larry Kramer’s living room, the world changed forever.  On that day, a group of brave gay men decided that they would rather fight the disease later known as AIDS than surrender to fear and helplessness.  They passed the hat, collected $7,000, and the idea of Gay Men’s Health Crisis was born. Those six men — 30 years ago today — became our founders.  Please consider making a gift to GMHC to match the $7,000 those extraordinary individuals raised to fight AIDS and love life at GMHC.org.

We also ask that you join us in celebrating their courage over the next seven days by posting a picture of your living room on our Facebook page, and what it means to you. Even with our growth, we always remember our roots. In our new building, as there has been in every building GMHC has occupied, there is a living room, a place where clients, volunteers, staff and supporters come together to help each other, to celebrate life, and to unite in the fight against AIDS.   What does your living room mean to you, your friends, and family?  Let us know!
