NEW YORK, NY (June 20, 2018)--The following is a statement from Kelsey Louie, CEO, Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC):

GMHC applauds Governor Andrew Cuomo for proclaiming Edie Windsor Day on June 20 (her birthday). She would have been 89 today. A friend to GMHC and loved by tens of thousands, Edie was a fierce marriage-equality activist--even in her petite frame. She took on the U.S. Supreme Court with a lawsuit, challenging the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that kept the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, including hers to Thea Spyer. She was successfully represented by attorney Roberta Kaplan, who is also the Co-Chair of GMHC's Board. In 2013, the portion of DOMA that banned federal recognition of same-sex marriages was overturned.

In her final years, Edie continued to speak out in support of full equality for LGBTQ people and other social justice issues. In 2016, she married Judith Kasen-Windsor. Tragically, Edie died on September 12, 2017, a devastating loss to this country. We will continue to celebrate her remarkable life and courageous activism, especially now each year on June 20. We thank Judith for continuing to lift up the legacy of Edie's life.
