The Bottom Line on Rectal Microbicide Research

1.23.2013
11:30am - 1:00pm
GMHC
446 West 33 Street, New York, NY 10001-2601
Room 6799/6802

Unprotected anal intercourse is 10 to 20 times more likely to result in HIV infection compared to unprotected vaginal intercourse. Unprotected anal intercourse—a common human behavior—is a significant driver in the global HIV epidemic among gay men and transgender women as well as among heterosexuals.

Topics to be covered:

  • Brief overview of rectal microbicide research and advocacy (What are they? When will we have them?)
  • Next scientific step: launch of MTN-017, the first ever Phase II trial of a rectal microbicide
  • Viewing of new educational video, “The Rectal Revolution is Here: An introduction to Rectal Microbicide Clinical Trials,” produced by IRMA, the Population Council and Microbicide Trials Network
  • Discussion: Will rectal microbicides replace condoms? How can we confront the stigma attached to anal sex? How can you get involved in the effort?

About the presenter:

A gay man living with HIV since 1995, Jim Pickett is Director of Prevention Advocacy and Gay Men's Health at AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC). He is the Chair of IRMA, International Rectal Microbicide Advocates, an AFC-based network of more than 1,200 advocates, scientists, policy makers and funders in support of the research and development of safe, effective, acceptable and accessible rectal microbicides. POZ Magazine has honored his efforts in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by including him in the magazine's "Top 100" lists as a "soldier... instrumental in fighting for much-needed new prevention methods [and] undeterred by subjects many would prefer to ignore." In 2005, he was inducted into Chicago's Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame by Mayor Richard M. Daley, and has run four marathons to raise money for HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs.

The discussion is free and open to the general public. Light refreshments will be provided.
