Ask GMHC

How difficult is it for a PWA to travel to the US?

Question

I am a PWA but I don't live in the U.S. I'm looking for the latest information about what kinds of restrictions are placed on persons with HIV entering your country. Since 9/11 are there more luggage searches? If they find anything like meds, would they refuse to allow entry to a traveler who has these drugs? I just want to know my chances of getting through.

Answer

You ask some really good but difficult questions about traveling to the U.S. if one is HIV-positive. It's very difficult to say if the number of searches has increased or if the likelihood of getting through with medications has decreased. If you like we can forward your email to our Legal Department for further clarification or some thoughts.

Aegis has a travel section you can check out to read more about the restrictions that exist. Another site that might help is the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force since they are also involved in immigration issues for people with HIV. Please click here for more information on Immigration and Legal Services at GMHC.

We hope this information will make a difference. It is a very challenging and frustrating position to want to visit the U.S. and have to deal with current restrictions for people with HIV. Please write back and let us know if we can assist you further with your concerns.

Good luck,
