Gay and Bisexual Men

The CDC reports that men who have sex with men (MSM), including gay and bisexual men, are the population most affected by HIV in the United States. In 2016, MSM represented 67% of the more than 40,000 new HIV diagnoses in the United States.

Black MSM are the most at risk, followed by Latino MSM: Black MSM comprised 38% of new infections among MSM, and Latinx MSM comprised 28% of new infections among MSM. Young MSM are also becoming infected at a higher rate, with MSM between the ages of 13 and 34 accounting for 64% of all new infections among MSM.

In New York City, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in 2017 nearly 58% (1,243) of the 2,157 total new infections across the city were among MSM.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) has a helpful guide about why MSM are so susceptible to HIV infection, and what they can do to help protect themselves and their partners.
