Fennel is a plant eaten as a vegetable mainly in Mediterranean
countries and parts of Europe. The seeds are considered a spice
in many cuisines of the world. It also has medicinal properties
and is generally safe for adults and children when used as a food
or tea.
PARTS USED: the seeds, as well as the whole plant.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR: Mainly used to help a distressed
digestive system, for abdominal pain, colic (in babies too), chills,
intestinal gas, etc. It helps to promote milk flow in breastfeeding.
In Chinese medicine, the seeds are thought to be tonifying for the
spleen and kidneys and are used for urinary and reproductive disharmonies.
Is also used for heartburn, asthma, flatulence, coughs and to help
lower blood pressure.
HOW TO TAKE THIS HERB: as a an infusion: 1 teaspoon
of seeds per per cup of boiling water. Cover and let steep for 15
to 20 minutes, strain and drink. As a decoction: simmer slowly during
20-30 minutes, covered, 2-3 teaspoons of the seeds per cup of water.
Mostly used in Chinese medicine this way. As a tincture or capsules:
follow manufacturer's instruction. Use the infusion as a mouth wash
or gargle, for sore throats, gum disorders and bad breath. It is
also used as essential oil: as a chest rub, mixed with other essential
oils plus almond or sunflower oils. A weak solution of the infusion
is sometimes given to babies suffering from colic.

The volatile oil of the seed can be irritating to persons with allergies
or skin sensitivities. Fennel is also a uterine stimulant so avoid
high doses during pregnancy. The essential oil has a similar effect.
