Astragalus Root (Astragalus
membranaceous)
In China, this herb is considered one of the best for the immune
system. The roots are usually sliced diagonally, making them look
like a tongue depressor. Generally, the older root is of better
quality. . The systems/organs that are affected by its use are the
spleen, kidneys, blood and lungs. It is considered a tonic and an
adaptogen (meaning it helps to normalize body functions).

WHAT IT IS USED FOR: it is used to increase energy,
build resistance to illness, increase production of white blood
cells, fight bacteria, promote T4 cell formation; stimulate appetite,
fights fatigue, combat colds and lung problems. It may increase
resistance to viral infections, aid in would healing, and reduce
water retention in kidney complications, help to control blood sugar,
and may reduce side effects of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments.
HOW TO TAKE THIS HERB: as a decoction: 1 heaping
teaspoon of shredded root, or 2-3 sticks, per cup of water, simmer
covered for 15-20 minutes, strain before drinking as tea; it is
also available as a tincture and in capsules/tablets (following
instructions on manufacturer's label). Whole pieces may be added
to soups and stews. Remove them before serving. The tea can be used
to mix with concentrated frozen juices instead of using plain water
to reconstitute them.

Astragalus is not recommended when there is acute diarrhea, it is
not a problem if there is chronic mild diarrhea. Taking large concentrated
amounts for a prolongued period, in the form of extracts or capsules,
may cause abdominal and chest tension in some people.
