Navigating the Affordable Care Act

Open enrollment ended on 1/31/18. You may be eligible for Special Enrollment Opportunities if you experienced certain life changes after this date. If you are eligible for a Special Enrollment opportunity you will have 60 days to choose a plan. The next Open Enrollment will start on November 16, 2018. There has been no decision about how long it will last.

  • Have you moved?
  • Did you get married?
  • Did your insurance end? Were you on COBRA? You have 60 days to pick another plan.
  • Do you know that ADAP is not insurance? If you are only on ADAP you do not have comprehensive insurance and you could have a penalty next year.

Anyone eligible for Medicaid or the Essential Plan can enroll throughout the year. New York is a Medicaid Expansion state, so more people are eligible. If the annual income for a single person is less than $16,105, Medicaid is an excellent option. The Essential Plan offered by the State, if an individual’s income is less than $24,120, is similar to Medicaid and can be free or cost $20 a month.

The next Open Enrollment will start on November 1, 2018 for coverage on January 1, 2019.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has created a number of changes that can be very challenging to navigate. Luckily, GMHC is an official ACA Navigator, and we are here to help.
