National Gay Blood Drive

On Friday, July 12th, GMHC will be lending our testing services to the support the U.S. National Gay Blood Drive.

The FDA has a ban against gay/bisexual men donating blood and refuses to lift it, even when studies have shown that it’s no longer necessary. And so we are having a nation-wide blood drive to bring attention to the ban and to increase pressure on the FDA to lift it. This is a grassroots effort and the first of its kind – it cannot happen without you.

The drive will take place on Friday, July 12th 2013 from 9am-5pm across all 50 states. The demonstration will consist of eligible gay/bisexual donors showing up to the blood donation center in their city, getting tested at an onsite mobile HIV testing unit, and then attempting to donate their blood. As each of them are rejected, we will collect each test result and deliver it to the FDA - visually conveying to them the amount of blood we would be able to contribute if they were to lift the ban.

Be sure to read our FAQ and other materials on the blood ban here, and you can visit the National Blood Drive webpage here.
