Short-Term Pantry


The Short-Term Pantry (also known as the emergency pantry) provides shelf stable, mostly ready to eat foods to individuals in need of immediate or emergency food assistance.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Short-term pantry bags are available to anyone in need.

What's included in the pantry bag?
Each package provides 9 meals (enough food for 3 meals a day for 3 days for one person). Packages may vary, but typically include:

  • Canned soup or stew
  • Canned beans
  • Canned fish
  • Rice
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruit
  • Cereal
  • Milk
  • Peanut butter
  • Snack bars or crackers
  • Juice

How often can I pick up?
Bags are available up to 4 times per year.

Application instructions:
No application is necessary. Walk-ins are accepted during pantry hours. Be prepared to provide the full name and date of birth of each individual receiving a short-term pantry bag.

Long-Term Pantry


The long term pantry is coordinated food assistance and nutrition education program that aims the health and well-being of HIV+ individuals and their dependent children.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • Must be HIV+
  • Must be a client of GMHC
  • Must meet income guidelines (185% of federal poverty guidelines; see below)
  • Rice
  • Must be a resident of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Westchester or Putnam Counties
  • Must be engaged in HIV medical care with regualr follow-up

What's included in the program?

  • Monthly food pantry packages for the client and their dependent children
  • Client choice food pantry offers a wider variety of foods and pacakges are tailored to the nutritional needs of each client
  • Each package provides 9 meals per person (enough food for 3 meals a day for 3 days)
  • Nutrition assessment and counseling every 6 months with an HIV NUtrition Specialist
  • Access to weekly nutrition and cooking classes

What's expected of me?
Participants are required to fulfill the following obligations in order to maintain enrollment in the program:


  • Must provide medical documentation at the time of program enrollment and every 3 months afterwards
  • Must provide proof of income and address at the time of program enrollment and every 6 months afterwards
  • Must complete recertification of program need and eligibility every 6 months
  • Clients who do not pick up for over 90 days (3 months in a row) will be removed from the program and must re-apply

Application instructions:
The program is currently full. To add your name to the wait-list, please call 212-367-1409 on Mondays between 10 am and 6 pm. Leave a voicemail message with your GMHC client code, full name and a phone number where we can contact you. You only need to call once. Someone will contact you to confirm that you have been added to the wait-list within a week. As of November, 2014 the wait is about 6 months. Wait times are subject to change based on demand.
