Substance Use and other Psychosocial and Behavioral Factors affecting
HIV Prevention
among MSM
Special Guests:
Jeffrey Parsons, PhD; Jose Nanin, EdD, and David Bimbi, MA, are from (Hunter College/CUNY) which conducts
research on social and psychological factors that contribute to HIV transmission. The presenters have been involved in research
on substance use and sexual risk practices of young adults, secondary HIV prevention efforts among HIV-positive individuals who
abuse alcohol and other drugs, and primary HIV prevention efforts among HIV-negative gay and bisexual men.
This forum will review studies conducted at the Center for HIV Educational Studies and Training (CHEST)/Hunter College addressing
factors impacting HIV prevention for gay and bisexual men, including substance use, barebacking, health care utilization, and sex
work. Special attention will be paid to the rise in crystal methamphetamine and other party drug use among gay and bisexual men.
Studies at CHEST also seek to identify and promote strategies that prevent the spread of HIV as well as improve the lives of people
living with HIV.
