President Obama
Black History Month Events
Hosted and/or co-sponsored by GMHC

GMHC is proud to dedicate Black History Month, and annual series of events and testing days, to the new leadership of President Obama in honor of his inaugural declaration, "Choosing Hope over Fear." This message continues to resound in communities across the United States and throughout the world. There is distinct sense of promise through President Obama’s commitment to address the urgent issues of HIV/AIDS which includes developing and implementing a National AIDS Strategy.

Back to Basics on HIV/AIDS
Thursday, February 5, 11 am to 1 pm
The Women's Institute will host a workshop on the basic information of HIV/AIDS and prevention.

Circle of Voices
Friday, February 6
The Women's Institute will host a discussion for lesbians of color and offer HIV testing with the Geffen Testing Center. Saturday, February 7, National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day — The Public Policy Department and Geffen Testing Center will host a Testing Day at Convent Avenue Baptist Church, located on West 145th Street (between Convent and St. Nicholas Avenues) in the district of Councilmember Robert Jackson.

Heart & Soul: A Nutrition Workshop in Honor of African American History Month
Tuesday, February 10, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, Room 405/410
Many people appreciate soul food for its flavor and tradition. However, some people include ingredients in these dishes that can be higher in fat and sugar. The Nutrition Education and Wellness Program will present a cooking demonstration with Chef Carlin and discussion on heart-healthy soul food. Recipes and food samples will be provided.

Cupid's Dance
Friday, February 13, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, 12th floor

The Institute for Gay Men's Health will host a dance for youth (25 years and under).

Loving Yourself, My Sista
Tuesday, February 17, 10:30 am to 2 pm, Room 405/410

The Women's Care, Prevention and Support Services and Geffen Testing Center will host a day of discussion and HIV testing for women. Incentives will be provided to women who test.

Loving Your Man, Part 2 of Loving Yourself, My Sista
Thursday, February 19, 10 am to 2 pm, 6th floor

The Women's Care, Prevention and Support Services and Geffen Testing Center will host a day of testing for couples. Incentives will be provided to couples that test.

From Poverty to Self-Sufficiency: A panel discussion on the challenges and successes of back-to-work program in communities of people of color
Thursday, February 19, 10 am to 12 pm, Room 405

The Volunteer, Work and Wellness Center will host a panel discussion featuring representatives of back-to-work programs (including GMHC) and a former client of GMHC's Workforce Development Program who is a success story.

From Depression to the 21st Century
Tuesday, February 24, 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, 12th floor

The GED Program (part of the Volunteer, Work and Wellness Center) will host its sixth annual evening of readings, singing and dancing. The theme will be on the ability of African-Americans to overcome racism, discrimination and segregation to eventually elect Barack Obama President of the United States. The Program will include the accomplishments of African-Americans from the Scottsboro Trial in 1931 though the Civil rights Movement (1954-1968) to the election of President Obama.

All events will be held at GMHC, The Tisch Building, 119 West 24th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues) in Manhattan unless otherwise specified.
