Action Center

The Action Center is a safe space where GMHC participants learn from each other about policies which affect people living with HIV/ AIDS. We are activists and survivors whose goal is to empower each other to become leaders and informed change-makers. Our mission is to raise awareness and advocate for improved quality of life for our communities by informing decision-makers, conducting outreach, and sharing openly.

Information on Meetings, Times and Locations:

The Action Center meets throughout the week to discuss current legislation and policy changes (see schedule below). Speakers from local organizations are sometimes invited to discuss their work and to share how the Action Center members can get involved. All meetings are held in English.

The Action Center holds two general meetings, one co-ed and one for woman-identified members only:

General Action Center
These meetings are intended to inform GMHC clients about the latest in HIV and AIDS policy at the city, state and federal levels. We discuss the issues and plan actions to further advocate.

Women of the Action Center
These meetings provide information about how HIV/AIDS policies are affecting women today. These meetings are open to all woman-identified GMHC clients.

Main Facilitator: Chelsea Miller, Community Coordinator of the Policy Department

Working groups provide Action Center members a space outside of regular meetings to share ideas about public policies and related issues they care about. The following are the current groups and their specific purposes:

Self-Empowerment: To increase awareness related to accessing social services and care
Monday 3 – 4 p.m.
Action Center Headquarters, 7th floor

Releasing Health: To assist members infected or affected by HIV/AIDS who are working to influence various prison health policies, such as re-entry after incarceration and criminalization of HIV/AIDS
Tuesday 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Accountability: To foster accountability in addressing the needs of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS
Thursday 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. (Room 6265); 12 – 2:30 p.m. (Dining Room)

Creating Me: To help Action Center members become better and more confident speakers and listeners
Friday 4 – 5 p.m.

Facilitators: Action Center Members

ACTIONS: In addition to learning about policy changes, the Action Center makes an effort to translate that knowledge into advocacy. Advocacy includes participation in activities including rallies, voter registration, campaigns and lobbying.
