Gay Men's Health Crisis Issues State Policy Agenda
Provides Low-Cost Alternatives to Slowing the HIV/AIDS Epidemic
New York, NY Today, Gay Men's Health Crisis released its 2009 State Policy Agenda. Please click here for a full copy of the Agenda.
The 2009 State Policy Agenda lays out four major priorities of GMHC for the year: expansion of HIV testing while maintaining written informed consent; promotion of comprehensive sexuality education; strengthening the healthcare safety net for people living with HIV/AIDS; and investment in HIV/AIDS research to attract federal research dollars to New York State. Additional priorities include passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), passage of the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), and repeal of Rockefeller Drug Laws. GMHC also supports full marriage equality for same-sex couples, an end to anti-gay bullying, and expansion of HIV education and condom distribution in prisons.
"We all recognize that New York State is facing a grave financial crisis in 2009," said Marjorie J. Hill, PhD, Chief Executive Officer at GMHC. "GMHC's State Policy Agenda offers solutions to public health problems that policymakers can enact without burdening the state taxpayers. These solutions will go a long way towards improving the health of people living with HIV/AIDS, and help protect those in disproportionately affected communities at risk of infection."
To accompany the release of the document, clients and staff of GMHC traveled to Albany today to lobby Senate and Assembly members on budget and policy issues.
"Together we can improve our public health infrastructure in a responsible and comprehensive way," added Hill.
