Statement from Marjorie J. Hill, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Gay Men's Health Crisis,
on the Death of Martin Delaney, Founder of Project Inform
January 26, 2009, New York, NY Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) expresses our profound sympathy and sense of loss with the news of Martin Delaney's passing on Friday, January 23 after a long battle with cancer. Marty was a true leader in the national AIDS movement and an inspiration to many. Our deepest condolences are extended to Marty's family and friends, as well as the thousands reached through the Project Inform family.
Martin founded Project Inform, based in San Francisco, and was a pioneer of AIDS Activism. Project Inform educates people with HIV/AIDS about their treatment options and was the first group to set up a national AIDS treatment information hotline, according to the group's website.
While we are saddened by the loss of our friend and colleague, we revel in the substantial contributions he made to the HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and research fields. Thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS are experiencing longer, healthier lives because of the efforts of Marty. We take comfort in the notion that he inspired many more activists to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Messages of condolences can be sent to support@projectinform.org.
