GAY MEN'S HEALTH CRISIS APPLAUDS NEW LEADERSHIP IN ALBANY
New York, New York Despite the tremendous budget crisis facing New York State and the drastic cuts in HIV prevention and care services, Gay Men's Health Crisis is optimistic for the legislative session that lies ahead in Albany. GMHC will continue to work with the Governor and State Assembly, and the new State Senate majority to pass legislation and evidence-based public policies to help New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and all those affected by the epidemic.
GMHC is particularly pleased to work with the new State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith and Senate Health Committee Chair Tom Duane. Both Senators have been ardent advocates for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS, LGBT New Yorkers, and communities of color. We look forward to partnering with them, as well as Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assembly Health Committee Chair Richard Gottfried to actualize GMHC's Policy Agenda.
"We are ready to hit the ground running with the new legislature in Albany. GMHC will push forward its policy goals and seek to expand HIV testing, promote research, ensure stable housing, endorse science-based comprehensive sex education, strengthen the healthcare safety net, and advance civil rights throughout the state," said Sean Cahill, Ph.D., GMHC's Managing Director of Public Policy, Research, and Community Health.
As Governor David Paterson mentioned in his recent State of the State address, "this is a time for courage and hope" and "this is a time for action." GMHC will heed that call to action and work tirelessly with our leaders in Albany to hasten an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and prevent further cuts to critical services.
Dr. Cahill continued, "GMHC is hopeful and optimistic for the new legislative session. Yet we will also hold our new leaders accountable to ensure that every New Yorker living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS is properly and comprehensively served."
