After Governor's Announcement of Further Budget Cuts,
GMHC Warns Against Cutting Essential Services for People Living with HIV
Following is a statement from Sean Cahill, Ph.D., Managing Director of Public Policy, Research and Community Health at Gay Men's Health Crisis:
"We understand the fiscal crisis facing the state, and appreciate Governor Paterson's proactive leadership. However, the solution is not to cut essential services such as HIV prevention and care. The CDC announced last week that the number of people newly infected with HIV each year, over the past decade and a half, is 40% higher than we thought. New infections are up among gay men and continue to disproportionately affect Black and Latino Americans. Given the drastic cuts in city funding and the new higher HIV incidence figures, we urge the state government not to cut funding for critical services for people living with HIV/AIDS and at a high risk of infection."
