NYS ASSEMBLY SPEAKER SHELDON SILVER APPOINTS
GMHC CEO DR. MARJORIE HILL TO NYS AIDS ADVISORY COUNCIL
New York, NY New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver recently appointed Marjorie J. Hill, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), to the New York State AIDS Advisory Council.
Created in 1983 by Public Health Law, Article 27-E, Section 2778, the NYS AIDS Advisory Council is responsible for advising the state's Commissioner of Health and making recommendations about issues related to HIV and AIDS. The Council consists of seventeen members, three of whom are appointed by the Assembly Speaker. The members represent educational and medical institutions; local health departments; nonprofit organizations, including the advocacy and service communities; legislators and persons living with HIV/AIDS. Members do not receive compensation for their services.
"I am excited to have this opportunity to help shape HIV/AIDS public policy in the state of New York," said Dr. Hill. "New York remains the epicenter of the epidemic. The NYS AIDS Advisory Council's critical role in developing policy has the ability to influence the nation."
"We at GMHC are particularly concerned about the high incidence of HIV/AIDS among young gay men of all races, and especially among men of color who have sex with men, and the increase of new cases among women of color. I bring these concerns with me as I sit at the Council table," continued Dr. Hill.
"We appreciate the Speaker's recognition of GMHC's leadership, and we are committed to working closely with him and all of our elected officials to reduce the incidence of HIV throughout New York."
