Gay Men's Health Crisis to Commemorate
25 Years of Leadership in the Fight Against AIDS at
GMHC Heroes Honors 25th Anniversary Dinner
New York, NY On Monday, March 12, 2007, friends and
supporters of Gay Men's Health Crisis will gather to commemorate
the 25th anniversary of GMHC and the 25th year of the AIDS Epidemic.
The GMHC Heroes Honors 25th Anniversary Dinner, at Pier Sixty,
Chelsea Piers, will be a special evening of reflection on the agency's
quarter-century of service and advocacy on behalf of people living with
AIDS, and an opportunity for rededication in the fight against AIDS.
Officially established in early 1982 before AIDS or its causes were
identified GMHC was the first organized response to what was then
perceived to be an illness among gay men. AIDS has since developed into the
most devastating health issue of our time, a global pandemic touching every
aspect of society, with over 25 million lives lost worldwide.
Gay Men's Health Crisis was founded to provide support, information,
and advocacy for people with AIDS. To this day, GMHC remains a leader
in HIV prevention, creating innovative campaigns to raise awareness of
the epidemic particularly among gay men and women, who continue to be
disproportionately affected while mobilizing communities to address the
structural issues which continue to drive the epidemic: poverty, racial
and gender inequality, and homophobia.
On Monday, GMHC will pay tribute to some of the most dedicated
supporters of our work: prominent individuals and institutions who
over the past 25 years have committed themselves to leadership in the
fight against AIDS. The evening's honorees are: Mathilde Krim, Ph.D.,
Founding Chairman of amfAR; Craig R. Miller, AIDS Walk Founder; Davis
Polk & Wardwell; Viacom, Inc; Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III,
Chairman of the Board, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS; fashion
designer Michael Kors; Mitchell Gold, co-founder
and chair-man of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams; and Bob Williams, co-founder and
President of Design for Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. The Honorary
Chair for the evening is Phil Donahue.
The evening will feature a special appearance by Cyndi Lauper,
who will also present the Heroes Honors Corporate award to Viacom
CEO Philippe Dauman. New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn
is also scheduled to be among the evening's presenters.
