GMHC APPOINTS NEW CEO AND COO
Appointments Part of New Managment Structure
NEW YORK, N.Y., Oct. 25 The Board of Directors of Gay Men's Health
Crisis (GMHC) today announced the appointments of Marjorie Hill, Ph.D. as Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) and Robert Bank, Esq., as Chief Operating Officer (COO)
for the agency. These appointments are part of a new management structure created
by the Board to prepare and advance the agency into the future.
The new structure is the result of an official search that began
in January 2006, after the departure of Ana Oliveira, GMHC's previous
Executive Director.
"After an exhaustive, widespread and detailed search, that included
the efforts of an executive search firm, it became clear to the Board
that the best candidates were in our own backyard", said John E. Colón,
GMHC Board Chair. "As the search intensified, it also became clear that
the longstanding management structure at the agency needed to be modified
to meet the ever increasing challenges of the epidemic and the political
environment in which we live."
Colón also added, "this new structure will enable the agency
to better allocate and target its energies on the essential functions
of GMHC, program services, public policy and advocacy, and fundraising.
It provides the foundation for GMHC's evolving response to the continually
shifting HIV/AIDS epidemic."
Dr. Hill was most recently the Interim Executive Director for GMHC,
served as the first director of the Women's Institute, and served as a
GMHC Board member from 1994 to 1999 and Board co-chair from 1999 to 2001.
Mr. Bank has been with GMHC for more than 10 years, and prior to
this appointment, served as Associate Executive Director for Programs
and Operations, where he managed the day-to-day provision of client
and volunteer services, information technology, human resources and
facilities. Mr. Bank also previously directed the agency's Legal
Services Department.
Under the new structure, the COO position will report directly
to the CEO, and will also have direct reporting responsibility to
the Board on programmatic and fiscal issues. Other details of the
new structure are in the process of being finalized.
The search for the executive director position was conducted
by Philips Oppenheim, an executive search firm specializing in
non-profit agencies, and GMHC's Board of Directors.
