GMHC STATEMENT ON GAY MARRIAGE RULING
Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) is saddened by today's New York
State Court of Appeals ruling on gay marriage. We are saddened
that once again gay and lesbian couples have been denied the right
to due process and equal protection under New York State's marriage
law. However, we are encouraged that the court's ruling left open
the possibility that the state Legislature could decide to allow
same-sex marriages.
Building stable relationships is a tool of HIV prevention, but
until stable relationships are recognized by law and society, halting
the transmission of HIV will continue to be a challenge. GMHC
urges the state Legislature to legally recognize gay marriage so
that gays and lesbians are able to form solid, long-term families
and, in the process, help to reduce HIV transmission.
