In
Memoriam:
William F. McCarthy
1936 2004
Former Chair of the GMHC
Board of Directors, William F. McCarthy, died on July 26th at St.
Vincent's Hospital after an extensive battle with cancer.
Bill was the quintessential advisor and leader for numerous corporations,
advisory councils and non-profit organizations, including GMHC.
He served on our Board of Directors for nearly a decade. He first
joined the Board in July 1995, served in many leadership capacities
and eventually was elected as Co-Chair in 1999. In 2001, he assumed
the role of Chair, which he held until June 2003. Bill saw GMHC
through difficult times and provided steadfast leadership to help
lead the agency to its current position of strength and fiscal
stability. His AIDS-related work extended beyond New York City
where he served as a member of the New York State AIDS Advisory
Council.
We will remember Bill for his unshakable commitment towards people
living with and affected by HIV and AIDS; his remarkable tenacity
and strength in the pursuit of social justice concerns; and his
dedicated generosity to ensure the wellbeing of GMHC and other
organizations. We are honored to have benefited in so many ways
from his wisdom and his compassion.
The William F. McCarthy Leadership Fund has been established to provide
essential financial support to new programs of national significance
in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Donations in Bill's memory may
be sent to the William F. McCarthy Leadership Fund at GMHC, The Tisch
Building, 119 West 24th Street, New York, NY 10011.
