GMHC 50+ Life.Long.

50+ Life.Long
In response to the increasing numbers of men and women living with HIV and AIDS over 50 years of age GMHC has established the 50+ Life.Long program. This program which includes activities and services across many of the GMHC departments has strengthened the capacity of existing GMHC services to effectively provide quality HIV prevention and care services to this population and developed new programs targeted to the older adult population. Among the targeted programs offered are the following:

  • Social marketing and community education to raising awareness of the issues of HIV among the over 50 population
  • Publication of educational materials about HIV and AIDS among older adults
  • Targeted HIV testing events for men and women over 50
  • Advocacy and empowerment programs to support the voices of persons over 50 in making sure that their needs are addressed
  • Health and wellness workshops on treatment issues and nutrition specifically geared to the older adult population
  • Social and recreational activities such as outings to museums, landmarks, walking tours, and art and reading groups
  • Educational workshops on economic and health access issues for older adults, including Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and work opportunities
  • Legal services support & workshops on legal concerns in relation to HIV and aging

For more information on these programs and the specific programs call 212.367.1284 or e-mail lifelong@gmhc.org.

Partnerships

In an effort to assure that the needs and concerns related to HIV and older adults are met in New York City GMHC has partnered with three organizations which are leaders in programs, services and research with older adults. We invite you to learn more about these partner organizations. They are:

AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA) is a collaborative not-for-profit organization, that studies new treatments for HIV and AIDS and related diseases and provides a comprehensive HIV health literacy program. As a pioneer in research on aging and HIV, and as author of the groundbreaking Research on Older Adults with HIV (ROAH) study, ACRIA is widely recognized as providing the leadership needed to engage the challenges of living with HIV and aging.

GRIOT (Gay Reunion In Our Time) Circle is a grassroots organization which seeks to address the needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens, particularly people of color.

Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is a social service organization dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the senior gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.) SAGE is the world's oldest and largest non-profit agency dedicated to serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender senior citizens.

Memberships:
GMHC is a member of the New York Association of HIV Over Fifty (NYAHOF). NYAHOF was formed in 1991 to address issues related to HIV/AIDS and older adults. Its purpose is to ensure that the concerns of persons over the age of fifty and their support networks are addressed, and to generate educational, programmatic, and policy initiatives in the field of aging. GMHC supports NYAHOF by providing office space and support.

GMHC is a member of the Council of Senior Centers and Services of New York City, Inc. (CSCS), a membership organization of more than 200 senior service agencies serving over 300,000 senior citizens throughout New York City. Our goal is to unite, represent and serve member senior service providers to ensure that the elderly of New York City receive quality services. CSCS is the professional organization for service providers and a champion for seniors.

The GMHC 50+ Life.Long. program thanks the M·A·C AIDS Fund for its generous support for this program.
