| Dealing with insurance and benefits can be very stressful for
a person living with HIV or AIDS. GMHC can help you understand and
apply for the different government entitlement programs that are
available to you. The rules and regulations for applying may seem
overwhelming, but once you have a basic understanding of the programs,
you can make the system work for you.
This fact sheets on the right describe the benefits you may be
entitled to and the eligibility requirements for each program. These
benefits are not automatically provided; you must apply for them.
GMHC's Advocacy Unit can help you in determining eligibility and
can make referrals to entitlement agencies. Please note that the
dollar amounts listed in some of the benefits described may vary
from state to state.
When you request assistance from GMHC's Advocacy Unit by calling
212/367-1125, an assessment is made to determine which benefits
you are eligible for. The assessment is made over the phone. If
necessary, you will be provided with the appropriate application
forms and instructions.
GMHC offers a forum covering the various benefits programs. It
is open to the public and is held on a monthly basis. Please call
the GMHC Advocacy Helpline for the exact time, date and location
of the forum. Bear in mind that advocacy groups do not control the
granting of benefits; various agencies governed by federal, state
and local laws are responsible for this. We are here to help guide
you through the maze of applications, requests and confusing jargon
and to provide advocacy on your behalf.
The best time to plan for disability and other entitlement programs
is before you leave work. Although you cannot apply for certain
benefits until you have stopped working, start to educate yourself
now.
