New Report Shows NYC Mayoral Candidates' Response to HIV/AIDS

Today, Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) issued its 2009 Mayoral Candidates report. The document features the positions and stances of four candidates for Mayor of New York City: Tony Avella, Michael Bloomberg, Tyrell Eiland, and Bill Thompson. Three of these candidates completed a questionnaire sent by GMHC, which is also included in the report. Of the three respondents, all indicated support for restoration of City funds to target prevention with young women, and opposition to further cuts for focused outreach and care for young men who have sex with men (MSM).

"GMHC is committed to educating the broader community about our elected officials' records on HIV/AIDS," said Marjorie Hill, PhD, Chief Executive Officer. "We are proud to add this report to our 2007 Presidential Candidates report and the 2008 Vice Presidential Candidates report, and help make the HIV/AIDS community informed constituents," added Hill. Candidates Bill Thompson and Tyrell Eiland also indicated their support for maintaining written, informed consent as part of HIV testing, as indicated by their survey responses. This is a key cornerstone of GMHC's State Policy Agenda. Click here to view the 2009 Mayoral Candidates report.
