Gay Men's Health Crisis Expresses Profound Appreciation for the Life Work of Senator Ted Kennedy
GMHC joins individuals and organizations throughout the country in acknowledging the ground-breaking contributions of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. The Civil Rights Movement would not have seen some of its successes with him.
He significantly shaped the country's response to HIV/AIDS epidemic. Along with Senator Hatch, he was the original sponsor of the Ryan White CARE Act, the nation's healthcare program designed specifically to care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Senator Kennedy was also key in subsequent reauthorization of the landmark program. He was integral to prior and current efforts to reform health care in the country.
"It is hard to imagine America without his leadership," stated Marjorie Hill, PhD, Chief Executive Officer at GMHC. "All people, especially those living with HIV, experience a better quality of life because of Senator Kennedy's lifelong commitment to human rights. "We will remember his legacy of work as Congress prepares to reauthorize the Ryan White Care Act and adopt health care reform."
