GMHC Names Janet Weinberg as New Chief Operating Officer
New York, NY After completing a national search, GMHC today announced the appointment of Janet Weinberg to Chief Operating Officer (COO). Ms. Weinberg is a recognized leader in the health, social justice and fundraising fields for over 25 years. In the role of COO, she will direct the day-to-day operations of this $31 million/year organization that provides direct health care services, HIV prevention and testing interventions, education, research, advocacy and public policy development. Along with GMHC's Chief Executive Officer, Marjorie J. Hill, PhD, to whom the COO reports, Ms. Weinberg will implement a robust five-year strategic plan adopted by the Board of Directors in 2008 that will reinvigorate GMHC's leadership in the fight against AIDS.
"With Janet's fortitude and leadership during these past four years, GMHC annual budget expanded from $21 million to $31 million," said Dr. Hill. "This outstanding achievement has allowed us to provide services with vast richness in all aspects of programming and operations. Now as COO, I am confident her contributions will greatly expand in the advancement of GMHC's mission, vision and core values."
Ms. Weinberg was previously the Senior Managing Director of Development and Legislative Funding at GMHC. Her duties comprised of public and private solicitation of funds. One of her noteworthy successes was obtaining the organization's first-ever federal appropriation of $300,000 which provides much-needed support for crystal methamphetamine programming. Before joining GMHC in 2005, Ms. Weinberg was the Director of Development at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Prior to her work in the AIDS and LGBT social justice movements, she practiced as an Occupational Therapist which included managing over 1,000 therapists who worked in a range of settings.
"GMHC is the cornerstone for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, community awareness and advocacy," said Ms. Weinberg. "I believe the COO position is one that can have profound effect on eradicating HIV. My careers in healthcare and in raising funds for social justice have convinced me that compassion, strategic thinking and resources are key to achieving these goals."
Ms. Weinberg will begin her new position on August 10.
