GMHC applauds Lambda Legal for Victory in HIV Discrimination Case
Gay Men's Health Crisis applauds Lambda Legal for its historic victory in the HIV discrimination case Taylor vs. Rice. Lorenzo Taylor expected the same rights and benefits as anyone else applying for a job as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. State Department. When he was rejected on account of his HIV status, he fought back with an exemplary team of attorneys from Lambda Legal. After a five-year long lawsuit, the State Department dropped its shameful HIV hiring ban.
On a daily basis, GMHC bears witness to people living with HIV and AIDS who have experienced discrimination in the workplace and other areas of their lives. Unfortunately, our government continues to use HIV status as grounds for discrimination. Since 1987, the U.S. has banned HIV+ noncitizens and nonresidents from entering the country and barred nonresidents already living in the U.S. from most types of legal status.
Lambda Legal's victory reminds us that perseverance, courage and commitment to the struggle can lead the way to fairness, justice and equality.
